Job Description
The Research Services Unit of the ARC provides multiple technical skills for the advancement of research with a focus on efficiency, dependability, integrity and quality so the research community can further their scientific efforts and as a result, strive to improve the quality of human life. The Technologist is expected to execute in vivo projects from beginning to end as dictated by research needs. Required to work in all areas of the facility and with all species, especially severely immunocompromised study models.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Receives and performs requests for animal-related technical services. Receives service requests and communicates with research staff and supervisor to schedule completion. Responsible for collecting biological samples, processing samples, and working with cryo freezing techniques of samples. Verifies compliance of requested procedures with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved animal research protocols. Initiates and completes requested procedures according to standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements. Prepares and sanitizes supplies and equipment. Generates cage cards using specialized computer software. Completes appropriate documentation for billing and record-keeping purposes.
  • Performs routine techniques on a variety of laboratory animal species as directed. Maintains current skill level as required by the unit customer needs to include but not limited to the following: Handling, restraint, identification, preparation of dose levels and dosing, sample collections. (Toxins, Chemo, Human tissues and Cells, etc.); Administration of anesthesia and euthanasia; Transferring animals within the ARC.
  • Provides rodent breeding colony support and maintenance in accordance with specific research needs. Requirements are but not limited to: Mating (i.e. monogamous, timed pregnancy, harem maintenance, etc.), weaning, fostering, record keeping, sample collection.
  • Performs Special Heath Observations as requested by research staff for specific research projects with various species. Communicates findings with supervisor, veterinarian, and research staff. Administers treatments for both expected and spontaneous illnesses in accordance with protocol and under direction of research staff and veterinarian.
  • Procures animals from approved vendors and coordinates imports and exports from other institutions both nationally and internationally. Processes animal orders, all associated invoices. Creates and maintains all associated records for USDA species. Coordinates third party rederivation processes
  • Assists with pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic projects and surgical procedures.
  • Performs routine animal husbandry as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in an animal science related field preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Six (6) years of experience in a professional animal care facility (e.g. zoo, veterinary clinic, laboratory animal facility) is required with a high school diploma/GED.
  • Must have hands on experience with animals (equipment processing for animals is not an acceptable experience)
  • Two (2) years of experience may be acceptable with a relevant Associate's degree.
  • No experience may be acceptable if the necessary basic skills, knowledge and principles of laboratory animal science have been acquired through the completion of a relevant Bachelor's degree.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • (LC:ALAT) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is required within 18 months of hire.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $22.00 - $38.50 per hour for the role of Research Services Technologist.
